Caring for the elderly population has many unique challenges that are not easily discernable
or obvious to most people. The elderly have physical and emotional challenges that they
themselves have to come to accept over time, and losing their independence has emotional
implications that younger people may not understand. At the same time, caring for an
elderly parent requires much patience and adjustment because it is difficult for a younger
person to relate to. There may be temperment issues in an elder that appears
irrational but could be due to stress that is not obvious to a younger person. Understanding
subtle behaviors becomes a requirement to finding reasoning behind certain actions that may
seem illogical or foreign. As a result of the many facets and
challenges on both sides of the caregiving equation, communication and good working
relationship is key.
